During last years our region has made some progress in nursing newborns. The evident is the infant mortality index decreasing, which in 2006 was 7.91 per 1000 neonates (in Ukraine – 10.1). However, the further improvement of rendering qualitative specialized help to newborns is possible only on condition of timely revealing women with pregnancy complications, determining the necessary therapy, choosing the appropriate pregnancy and delivery approach, supplying mothers, fetuses and newborns with everything required according to contemporary achievements of medical science and practice.

As the above-mentioned principles of perinatal help can be the most efficiently realized in a perinatal center, the oblast authorities took a decision in 2000 to create such a center in the Volyn Regional Children’s Territorial Medical Center.
